While we still drink tea, coffee is dominant. Obviously we once cared about tea, there was a party and everything, so what happened?
The Tea and Stamp tax and the subsequent Boston tea party played a part in the national switch from tea to coffee but the final impetus was George Washington's endorsement of Brazilian coffee over British tea in 1774. This endorsement, during a dinner party at Hamilton's residence in Boston, resulted in the elite of Boston, and then Philadelphia and New York, preferring coffee over tea both as simply a status symbol(because coffee was so much more expensive) and to show solidarity with the revered General Washington.
As this trend spread through the elite of the 13 colonies, it gradually filtered down to the middle and lower class. This was made possible by the wider-scale adoption of coffee which drove down the price and the adoption of Bahamian coffee which was cheaper since it was produced closer to the colonies.
