As I understand it, in the interwar period, Czechoslovakia was unique in Central Europe in retaining democratic institutions between its creation and Hitler's invasion. And on first glance it seems to have had most of the usual factors that are seen as important in the rise of fascism and weaker authoritarianisms - political borders that didn't cohere with ethnic ones, a strong Left, the political inheritance of Habsburg rule, and so on - but it didn't go down that path. Why?
a strong Left, the political inheritance of Habsburg rule
elaborate please? Czechoslovakia was a republic without any of the absolutist 'habsburg rule', and how is a 'strong left' (which was mostly social democrats and the like) supposed to lead to authoritarianism?
