Why did samurai sheath their katanas with the sharp end upwards?

They drew the blunt edge across their thumbs to guide the sword into the sheath. In fact that is why these weapons were single edged blades. It was much faster, easier and looked far more elegant (and formidable) than fumbling around sheathing a dual bladed weapon. Look up "Iaijutsu" for more information.
