My wife is an Art Historian currently working on royal ordinances of Tudor and Stuart England, and after hearing about some rules around beer and salt I got curious. My wife mentioned that in this time she had been told by another historian that the beer was relatively low alcohol by todays standards. I have done some home brewing and from that know that the more food you give yeast the more alcoholic it becomes.

So is there a truth to the idea that beer in England in 1400 - 1649 might have been considered weak?
