Textbooks, one-volume shallow narratives or multi-volume in-depth treatments. Any academic who likes a particular current one, or any student who was pleased with one they used in class.
A lot of good stuff has been posted on the Reading List, but for France it's pretty focused, and thin for the period between Joan of Arc and the Revolution- The Return of Martin Guerre is not enough.
So you specifically want between Joan of Arc and the Revolution? So roughly 100 Years' War to the deposition of Louis XVI? Paging /u/DonaldFDraper as he's a king on French historiography (as per his flair) but I would highly recommend the legendary work of John Lynn, "The Wars of Louis XIV, 1667-1714. It's not necessarily a military history, but it has military elements considering the man in question. David Bell's work The Cult of the Nation in France: Inventing Nationalism, 1680-1800 is also an unforgettable work to add to your collection.
