Many did travel the seas and oceans which is how the many islands of the Caribbean became populated, as well as other islands such as Easter Island edit- as was pointed out below, Easter Island was settled by Polynesians, not natives from the mainland, and is not directly relevant to the OP's question . As to why they didn't cross the entire ocean, someone more qualified will have to answer.
