My grandfather is a huge history buff and big on reading all about his Native American heritage. He told me yesterday that he was at a thrift store with my grandma and found the "most amazing book about the trail of tears". He seemed very excited about it, but did not get the book. He didn't give me much more info about it (no title), but I would love to get him one that is just as enjoyable. Any recommendations?
"The Cherokee Nation and the Trail of Tears" by Theda Perdue and Michael D. Green was the introductory material required for my undergraduate Native Americans through 1900 course. Though not an exhaustive account, this book covers contact through resettlement in the west, with an emphasis on the politics of removal in the early 19th century. Roughly 190 pages, relatively easy and entertaining read.
Unrelated slightly, but "Empire of the Summer* Moon" was another required reading which I'd highly recommend if your family has any interest in the rise of the Comanche from a people of relative insignificance to masters of mounted warfare. Great book.
