The British ended slavery in 1833 with Slavery Abolition Act that compensated slave owners for their loss of "property". Was there any type of push to do this in the United States?
Or was the US too far gone down the road to war at that point?
That happened. Lincoln tried compensated emancipation in Maryland (but the state wouldn't have it) and congress passed a compensated emancipation act for DC in 1862 that freed over 3000 people at a cost of around $1,000,000.
