Benjamin Franklin encouraged Paine to write a "history of the present transactions" a few months before its publication. The first pamphlet printed off was given to the Good Doctor. Making his mark, Paine had no interest in hiding his authorship.

Candid pieces were often published by pen name in British tradition. Sometimes everyone knew the author, but other times there was great conjecture, as with Publius and "his" Federalist Papers.
