I was watching the Sofia Coppola movie and they had an elaborate dressing ceremony. I know from other books I've read that there were elaborate meal rituals but would getting dressed each morning be so elaborate? If so, what other everyday tasks would be ritualized?
The dressing, eating, undressing, And other things, such as prayers or reading, could be ritualized for the sake of one reason, Louis XIV made it so. During his Youth, Louis XIV was king of a country tearing itself apart in the Fronde, a rebellion of the nobility against the state for the security of "ancient rights." Once the rebellion was destroyed, Louis centralized the State in every way possible, including having the nobility move away from their county homes to an appartment in Versaillaise. Here they would fight to be in these rituals where they would help serve the king or help him undress as a form of manipulation, Louis pitted the nobility against each other rather than him and they did it willingly just to get close for the sake of having access to power.
However the system worked only for Louis XIV, his grandson Louis XV managed to continue the system but not to the expertise of his grandfather. Louis XVI (the great great grandson of Louis XIV) hates the system and didn't fight to keep it.
The entire thing was to maintain control, control over a nobility ready to stab the king in the back when he would no longer be useful to them.
