Given the historic antagonism between Scotland and England, the not too distant memories of the Jacobite Rebellions and Culloden, as well as power being located far away in London, I'm curious if the burgeoning middle class in Scotland ever attempted to succeed from England?
As far as I knownot really. Most of the Jacobite Rebels slowly died off but in Ireland there was some protest which was influenced by the French Revolution and even supported by France. The United Irishmen were Catholics and Protestants who wanted to create an independent and republican Ireland. As they failed both governments of Great Britain and Ireland signed a treaty where they formed the United Kingdom. Scotland seemed unopposed at that moment given the proximity to Ireland and the good reasons (French support?) to attempt some rebellions. Also if they'd attempt would they agree on a monarchy or a republic?
