How far inland would merchants take fish from the ports? (before trains/engines were mainstream)

Catching fish is something that's been going on for thousands of years, but I never really knew how far inland one would expect to find Lobster and other fishes caught from the sea.

If this were the 1700's or 1800's, could I expect to find Lobster a day's travel from the port/site of catch, where the fish were dropped off?

Are the fish fresh, dried, smoked, pickled, or salted? And where in the world are you most interested?
