People always talk about what the Normans contributed to English society, would some of these have developed naturally if the Normans had never invaded? Like for example the census?
Anything after the Battle of Hastings, or thereabouts, would be speculation. We don't know what would have happened, had there not been a Norman Conquest - that's not what happened in our history. However, the mention of the census in your original reply wasn't a Norman innovation at all, but rather would have been introduced to the English by the Romans, about a thousand years before the Battle of Hastings (though, whether the British natives could have been called "English" in CE 43 is questionable.)
