I was reading another post, and the question came to mind, what happened to any money or belongings that Jewish people may have kept in banks or safe deposit boxes after WWII (I am talking about those who died during the holocaust.) I would think some rather wealthy people would have been taken to the camps and their bank accounts left sitting. Are there bank accounts out there worth a lot of money due to inflation and interest that no one will ever claim?
It was Nazi policy to take over bank accounts and possessions of anyone sent to a concentration camp as state property in order to fund the war effort. There aren't any bank accounts sitting around, but there have been and continue to be many legal attempts by survivors of the Holocaust and their descendants looking to reclaim their lost possessions such as art collections or other personal property from current holders in Germany.
There is a great scene in Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade where a Nazi official has come to the Middle East asking for permission to bring a Nazi expedition into their country. The Nazi offers him a treasure chest of gold, jewelry and valuables "donated by some of the finest citizens of Germany."
"Donated" meaning stolen from the Jews.
(In the end the Arab didn't care for the treasure but gladly took the Nazi's Rolls Royce as payment)
