The "Back to Africa" movement was a big idea in the 19th century USA (especially in the 1830's) that freed blacks should go back to Africa. 10's of thousands of former black slaves were sent back to Africa...but not to their home country. They were dropped off on the west coast of Africa and formed colonies. These eventually became the bases of the country of Liberia

Abdul-Rahman Ibrahim Ibn Sori was captured at the age of 26 and enslaved for 40 years. His family had helped an Irish man who recognized him in slavery years later, and after many more years of activism, he was he was freed in 1828. He went to Liberia with his wife (though not any of their nine children), but died of a fever before he could reach his hometown in modern-day Guinea.
