I just started researching the Crimean War, and the sheer magnitude of criminal incompetence with British logistics personnel and officers is staggering.
The idea that some British Officers could bring their wives and LEFT during the winter is particularly maddening. Why didn't the men fight back at all?
Were there any similar mutinies during this time period?
There certainly was at least one case where this was very likely in the Napoleonic period. At the battle of Vittoria the unpopular second-in-command of the 2/40th battalion asked his troops before combat to let the enemy have the honour of killing him, rather than suffering the dishonour of a wound in the back (making it look like he had run away). He did not survive the day.
