That and the fact that virtually any generalization about Native Americans is bound to be wrong as there were thousands of Native American groups and they had distinct cultural traits (that is how they are distinguished from one another). But this "brothers to the natives" assumption just won't fly. Native groups often held other native groups in as much contempt as they held Europeans. There was traditional enmity between many neighboring tribes. This was a major factor in "how the west was won". Europeans quickly recognized that they could pit one Native American group against another to their advantage.
