How were or weren't British generals in ww1 stupid, I know it's still an ongoing debate but I just want to know both sides of the story

First of all, outside the sphere of popular history/culture, the debate has moved on. It is absurd to suggest that all the countries of Europe suddenly had a generation of Generals that were dumb as posts all at the same time. It is, furthermore, ridiculous to suggest, in the face of the transformation warfare underwent between 1914-18, that these Generals never learned. There were some generals in the war on the British side that were pretty terrible, Hunter-Weston and Ian Hamilton to name a few, but by 1916-18 especially the BEF was putting in charge men who could get the job done, Ivor Maxse, Claude Jacob, the Earl of Cavan, Henry Horne, Julian Byng, Herbert Plumer, Henry Rawlinson, Walter Congreve, just to name a few.
