The Flag Kingdom of Hawaii, from around 1816, cleverly contains a mixture of both the Union Flag (cantoned in the top left corner) and the strips of the United States.

What was clever about it was because while the kingdom of Hawii was not under any occupation or pressure to create a flag combining the flags of the two nations. Instead, by combining the flags of the two greatest nations in the pacific at the time he was able to prevent his annexation both either United States or the British, effectively making his nation a protectorate of both and neither at the same time.

As a result, on November 28, 1843 both France and the UK formally recognized the kingdoms Independence. With the US joining them in 1849. Making the tiny kingdom, the first non-European indigenous state to be admitted into the Family of Nations.
