One particularly famous woman was Cornelia Africana, daughter of Scipio Africanus and mother to Gaius and Tiberius Gracchus. After her husband died, she refused to remarry, despite being quite a catch as the daughter of Scipio. She threw herself wholeheartedly into raising her children, and was quoted as saying "I want to be remembered not as the daughter of Scipio, but as the mother of Gaius and Tiberius Gracchus." Her devotion to her children meant that she became an icon of how Roman Republican matrons should behave.
