Did David Marshall Williams really develop the M1 Carbine while in prison?

Or is that just an urban legend? What role did he play in developing assault rifles for the military?

He certainly developed the first floating chamber/short-stroke piston rifles while in prison. The actual rifles are preserved in the permanent collection of the North Carolina Museum of History.

Some ten years later, Williams fitted this mechanism to an existing Browning design to form the M1 carbine.
