Was Casper the first "friendly ghost" type character?

I guess that depends on what you consider "friendly." There have been many helpful ghosts throughout historical works, such as Hamlets dead father, or the spirits in the underworld that help Odysseus in the Odyssey.

There's the Canterville Ghost from the 1887 story of the same name by Oscar Wilde.
