They were organised, and effectively fought, in the same way as in French line regiments, apart from different names of companies. Carabiniers were grenadier equivalents, so chosen from the tallest men in a battalion, and were used to lead attacks, or as a steady reserve. The voltigeurs were chosen from the most agile and those thought to be more resourceful, and were often used in extended order for skirmishing. The rest of a battalion were chasseurs, the fusilier equivalent in the line.
