There was a lot of disruption of normal patterns of fashion consumption in the south, however. Without imports of finished cloth, women had to turn to homespun (which also had a political meaning, as it had had during the protests before the American Revolution - self-reliance, sacrifice, etc.) and forgo the silks and sheer cottons they'd worn before. They also had to rely much more on mending and altering old dresses, and fashion plates to model their alterations on were not as readily available as they would have been in the north. There was, however, no specific adoption of styles on either side that were meant to show political sensibility.
