What was the goal of the French mandate in Syria?

I know most European countries had colonises the goal was mostly commercial but other than that what was the goal of the mandate in Syria?

The stated goal was to help transition Syria (and later Lebanon) to statehood. France and Britain agreed to the Sykes-Picot Agreement so that much of the region would be independent from the Ottoman Empire, and instead under French and British spheres of influence.
