Do you read Italian and French?

Many more scholars have written about Venice for a number of reasons. A popular history came out about the city within the last year, but I would caution against using it. Judging by the spiel, it looks like the author doesn't read Latin (huge problem and suggest to me that the scholar doesn't have many original insights).

The standard (and really the only) history in English is Epstein's Genoa and the Genoese, which came out in the late 90's.

edit: There's also a book called Genoa and the Sea about early modern Genoa. It's an interesting read, but Genoa was hardly at the apogee of its power in the early modern period.
