Interested in early Canada. I'd love information on what life was like for settlers, information about Canada (it's very hard to find any good maps of settlements/towns in Upper and Lower Canada), as well as Aboriginals. I also have an interest in Aboriginal and Settler mythology.
Due to their prolonged exposure as equals, the Mi'kmaq of Eastern Canada also have an interesting history (Chief Membertou) and mythology (Glooscap).
I am a fan the Mi'kmaq story of creating the Moose and Beaver. Initially both were too large and proved destructive to the land. So they were each radically reduced so as to be able to live harmoniously within their environment. Demonstrates a keen cultural/religious value of balance in lifestyles.
So - are you interested in all of the oral history and mythology of 60 different languages from 11 different language families, as well as the whole range of mythology and stories brought by settlers from across Europe, North America, Asia and the Pacific? Or do you have something more specific?
If you are interested in northern California native myths, Pliny Earle Goddard recorded these around the turn of the 20th century. Goddard was originally a Christian Missionary on the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation. He later became an anthropologist and was appointed as the first linguist at UC Berkely by Kroeber.
