Uhh well there's communism for one thing. Anti-Communism was widespread in the US as early as WW1. There was a widespread fear that communists would try to overthrow the government, and that was about 3 decades before the cold war. The US would even deport people who were merely suspected of being communist (or literally any other radical party, read about Sacco and Vanzetti).

So you could imagine the reaction that US as a unanimous whole would have to the USSR, the symbol of communism at the time, being their competing superpower. In essence, the cold war was a competition between the two superpowers to grow stronger than their opponent.

It wasn't about Germany, it was largely (if not completely) ideological.
