Here is a common depiction of what Ancient Near Eastern Cosmology seems to describe. The Biblical depiction mostly shares the cosmology of the surrounding cultures. It does not tend to counter it except on theological points (who the creator was, the primacy of creator over creation). Whether writers in the Hebrew Bible took it for granted that this was an actual depiction of the world or simply alluded to it poetically, they never seemed concerned to contradict this as the physical makeup of the world.
