I'm getting more and more interested in the life of Emperor Augustus and I'm tired of reading the Wikipedia page and random articles on the Internet. What is the definite book on Augustus?
I'm currently in my second year of a bachelor in history so a little complicated isn't a problem.
If this is not the right sub, please let me know where I should post this instead.
I'm not sure what historians opinions on Anthony Everitt are around here but I found his account of Augustus very accessible and entertaining. I have no doubt there are more academically rigorous books that you could read, but for a general overview I think it has a good combination of simplicity and complexity. As an amateur historian with an interest in Roman history I thought it was a fun read. I'd be interested to hear other suggestions, or specific criticisms of Anthony Everitts works. The book is titled Augustus: The Life of Rome's First Emperor.
I recently read Adrian Goldsworthy's "Augustus: First Emperor of Rome" and found it pretty enjoyable. Covered a lot of aspects of early Empire (military, economy, city planning, etc) and how Augustus influenced them.
