The Taliban was largely a creation of Pakistan (as opposed to being an organization that sprang up natively in Afghanistan) and the ISI (Pakistan's version of the CIA). Taliban is the plural of talib or "student"; the Taliban organization mostly consisted of Afghan war orphans who had been raised in madrassas (schools) in Pakistan and sent back to Afghanistan after their training/brainwashing. So it's no surprise that Pakistan would support them in the civil war.

Minor quibble with your question, though: the Taliban wasn't really around yet in 1992.
