Reading suggestions on the Roman Empire

by Notreallysureatall

I want to read a history of the Roman Empire, from start to finish. I just finished The Rise of Rome by Anthony Everitt, and it was great! My intent was to transition into Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, but...

Here's the problem. Rise of Rome ends at the assassination of Julius Caesar, but Decline and Fall doesn't start until the 2d century AD.

That leaves a HUGE gap in time, encompassing important rulers like Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Nero, the Year of the 4 Emperors, etc etc.

Is there any book - or books - covering this gap? One book dealing this all of this gap would be great, but I'm also willing to tackle a bio of each missing ruler.

Thank for any help!!!!
