I know (or at least I think I know) that a lot of natives stayed together in tribal units throughout much of the US's history (the 5 civilized tribes springs to mind) but did natives ever abandon their tribes and join the US? If so, how common was this? What would happen to the ones that tried to integrate?
Just checking: you're only asking about them doing it willingly as opposed to the boarding school / forced integration thing, right?
