As someone who wanted to join the military, but who couldn't becasue I didn't meet all the requirements, it seems a little strange to me how people could be conscripted if they really didn't want to go.
The military has all sorts of standards that are unknown in civilian life - rules against tatoos, flat feet, other physical and mental health standards, no criminal records (even minor), rules against homosexuality until recently.
Surely it would be pretty easy to just not meet one of these many standards if you really didn't want to be sent to fight?
In the United States, you could declare yourself as a conscientious objector, indicating that you did not wish to fight for moral or religious reasons. You were required to explain in writing your reasons for this. Some conscientious objectors became medics, but those guys were still shot at and killed a lot even though they didn't carry weapons. If you didn't want to fight or get shot at, you could join the Civilian Public Service and work in the United States.
