Why are stories of virgin birth so prevalent across history and the world?

by Billlington

Mortals being born by immaculate conception is common across the world and history - from Jesus in the Middle East to Huitzpochtili in Mexico to several ancient Egyptian myths. Is there a common thread among these examples (and many others)?

Edit - New to this sub, don't know why the South America flair is there.

Each week, we like to highlight questions that fit into a chosen theme. This week is Middle and South America. This includes Mexico, and since you mentioned Mexico in your post it got the this week's theme flair. Now, since your question is really about something else that happens to have some overlap, I'll be removing that extraneous flair for you.
