In places like Victorian England, where accents gave away birth place and thus social status, how common was it to fake the accent of a different class?

Accents in Victorian England would not have necessarily given away birth place, only social status and then birth place. Thus Lord Gort, whom I have mentioned elsewhere, despite being from County Durham, sounded like anybody else of his class, not like a person from County Durham.
