Reading it as entertainment but wanted to know if I should treat it purely as such and take it with an extra grain of salt or does it sum up a lot of the research in the area faithfully.
It's very old, and does not represent current scholarship. It is also highly simplified, given that it's popular non-fiction, and does not reflect the nuance of the field. Questions about its repute among historians and biblical scholars are sort of beside the point; it simply doesn't come up, because it doesn't stand within the realm of biblical scholarship. That's not its role. Reading it as entertainment is the way to go.
