I have not researched albino African Americans specifically, but perhaps I can shed a little light on this.

Homer Plessy, the African-American plaintiff in Plessy v. Ferguson which sanctioned segregation laws at the Supreme Court level, was only 1/8 black (1 black great- grandparent). He chose to break Louisiana's segregation laws purposefully as part of a specific legal effort to overturn segregation laws (which, as we know, failed).

Because of his ancestry, Plessy looked a lot like a white person. So much that, in order to be arrested like he planned, he had to inform the train conductor that he was black or else he would have been passed over.

In short, segregation wasn't based solely on how dark or light a person's complexion was.
