"Normal" might be the wrong word. After the war Germany was split in two, Communist East Germany and Democratic West Germany. West Germany was stable while East Germany was fairly oppressed, which lead to many East German family's trying to flee by going "Over the Berlin Wall". Germany was reunited in 1989 which could also be considered returning to normal.
