weird history question.

by Jessi_Stanberry

Okay, so I've always heard that they thought that when you sneezed it was demons trying to possess you. So how big of a deal was it when the pope sneezed? Was there mass hysteria or did he try and hide it? I can't get this stupid question out of my head and Google doesn't have the answer.

A meta-point: I scan through subject lines of postings to see if (1) it's a topic I'm interested in or (2) it's a topic I can talk knowledgably about. So I'd like to suggest that "weird history question" is not the most useful title for AskHistorians, because it doesn't describe what it's about and it's kind of clickbait.

"they thought that when you sneezed it was demons trying to possess you" is kind of begging the question. I did a search in AskHistorians for "sneeze". The only thread that got any significant replies was Why does we say "bless you" after someone sneezes?. The one direct reply just pointed to a Wikipedia article (with some good sources) that says that the origin of "bless you" is unknown, and "In some cultures, sneezing is seen as a sign of good fortune or God's beneficence."
