His greatness as a commander is very subjective. He has a good reputation, much of it probably earned due to his battlefield etiquette, somewhat open defiance of orders from Berlin and involvement in the July 20 plot, but overall his personal relationship with Hitler appeared to be a factor in his rise. As asked in the post I've linked, if he was so great, why was he not on the Eastern Front?
