In regards history as a "academic field", did it solify recently as a field or did it gradually "evolve"

Academic history as a subject developed in the mid-to-late nineteenth-century, but there have been historians and antiquarians for much longer than that. An interesting take on the topic, with respect to the subject's development in British academia, is R.I. Moore's inaugural lecture at Newcastle in 1996.
