There is good evidence that people slept differently before the light bulb, but it's not simply a case of whether people were more or less sleep deprived than they are now.
In his book "At Day's Close: Night In Times Past", Roger Ekirch used a large volume of historical documents to argue that prior to the industrial revolution most people practiced 'segmented sleep'. Essentially that involves having two shorter sleeps in a night instead of the now normal single sleep. People would go to bed earlier, sleep for a few hours, then wake. They'd spend several hours awake in the night resting, reading, praying, or otherwise getting busy, then have another sleep before morning.
Ekirch does say that the move to a single sleep, which he attributes to electric lighting, has meant we get less hours of sleep and are less well rested overall.
