Upon taking power in 1933, he inherited a Germany in recovery from the worst of the economic crisis. The Weimar Republic had made very hard choices, which reduced the drag of Versailles on the German economy. The Weimar Republic made serious efforts to reach an accomodation with the United States in hopes of establishing new free-trade zones. Weimar politicians were also promoting their ideas for peaceful development through shovel-ready programs like the Autobahn (which Hitler campaigned against).

By late 1939, however, Hitler had burned bridges with many potential trade partners. He'd spent massive amounts on rearmament, to the point that had peace continued, the German government could not have paid its bills. When war broke out, Germany was paying its creditors (in part) with vouchers for future tax refunds. Despite looting the gold reserves of Austria and Czechoslovakia, the German economy was teetering, loaded down with debt equal to 125% of GDP.

His choices in August 1939: war or default (with the renewed depression and possible coup attempts that could have provoked).

This should not obscure the fact that Hitler deliberately chose a provocative path which would end in a bloodbath. There was no necessity for him to go to war, except the crisis and artifical choice he manufactured when he began rearming and closing down peaceful means of economic development.
