Why didn't The PRC invade Taiwan shortly after they won the civil war in mainland China?

It seems like the best time to have done it would be before they had a chance to set up their government on the island.

In short, they couldn't realistically try and expect to succeed. I've heard some phrase it as 'virtually impossible' but that's a little more intense than I would personally put it.

But the general census is that circumstances didn't allow for it.
