Hello, I'm talking to some friends from the UK and I said that the english used to answer the phone by saying their phone number. They said it must have been fake because they never heard of it. I can still remember the video were they demonstrated how they did it but can't find it anymore. I can't even find with Google if this is true or not. Was I misinformed? Did I dream the video? Are they right or am I?

You will also often see examples of this in film from the war and post war years with the person answering the phone giving the exchange name and then number e.g. Mayfair 3421 - there is a fun discussion in Hansard on the introduction of all-figure dialing in the late 1960s and the problems likely to occur when people have to remember numbers....
