The most recent episode of the AskHistorians podcast has the special guest(who's name I have shamefully forgotten) claim that American doctirine was developed from French techniques of pre-testing fire locations and then applying that technique on a much greater geographical scale starting in 1941, implied to be data from across Europe. But what exactly were the logistics of such pre-fire study? Was it tested out before the war? How did they update that data as the war went on?
Calling u/vonadler: he/she provided an interesting and detailed post on artillery fire itself, but only very briefly (but equally interesting) on the data collection, computation, and land surveys required for it. Perhaps he/she or someone else will kindly elaborate on it some more?
