How was the 'ideal' woman portrayed in medieval portraits and manuscripts?

Interestingly, I'm struggling to think of any depictions of women in 'Germanic'/'barbarian' art during the 5th-7th centuries in N. Europe (think Salins' style I/II). This art is full of animals and human (male) faces and figures, but women aren't depicted. And, most of the jewelry on which this art was made was worn by women.
