There are two recent anthologies delve into the nature of the Volkegemeinschaft and the Third Reich: Visions of Community in Nazi Germany: Social Engineering and Private Lives and Pleasure and Power in Nazi Germany. Both books examine the social history of the Third Reich and how this preexisting cultural concept was transformed during the Third Reich. Not only do both anthologies give a broad array of current research on this topic, but their bibliographies and notations should give some indication of where to go next. Michael Wildt, something of a Young Turk among German historians, has also produced a monograph, Hitler's Volksgemeinschaft and the Dynamics of Racial Exclusion: Violence against Jews in Provincial Germany, 1919-1939. Wildt examines the group dynamics of the German "in-group" and how National Socialist-led violence against outsiders helped foster a sense of a National Socialist community.
