Hi! So I asked about this on /r/suggestmeabook but someone suggested I try here instead! I did a search to see if someone's asked already, but didn't see anything. Here's the text from my previous post:
I'm looking for some medieval romances to add to my independent study next semester. I have already read most of Chaucer, Malory's Le Morte (was my honours project), Sir Gawain, and Morgan le Fay.
Currently on the course list is: Beroul's Tristan Chretien's The knight of the cart Marie de France guigemar Havel ok the Dane Sir gawayne and dame ragnell
I need to add 5 more texts, and I'm honestly not sure what the best options may be.
(Sorry for the poor capitalization, I'm on mobile so it is such a pain with medieval texts. Hopefully I'm not breaking any rules here, please let me know if I have!)
What's your goal in the study? Does it have a specific chronological or geographic limit? Or are you trying to read all the most important romances? Are you only interested in Arthur, or also in (medieval) romances with classical origins?
Roman de Silence, published as Silence: A Thirteenth-Century French Romance, ed. and trans. Sarah Roche-Mahdi - concerns a female warrior who is raised as a boy and eventually sent on a mission to capture Merlin
Layla and Majnun, the great medieval Persian romance. Probably Nizami's version as translated by Rudolf Gelpke, The Story of Layla & Majnun is a good one to start with.
Parzival, Wolfram von Eschenbach's German Arthurian romance. There's a Penguin Classics translation from the critical edition which is solid.
Those are three of my favorites.
